For the first time, the county will hold a delinquent tax sale Monday on repossessed mobile homes, offering them to the highest bidders at the courthouse.

Treasurer Bill Rowell, who was elected in 1992, said the sale is a goal he’s had since he discovered mobile home owners were not being included in the sales as houses are. Some mobile home taxes have not been paid since 1986.

It’s not fair to the rest of the property owners not to treat mobile homes the same as stick-built houses, Rowell said. We mean business – we’re not kidding.

If the sale had been held Thursday, 322 mobile homes would have been on the auction block. Owners can avoid the sale by paying their tax bills by 5 p.m. Today at the treasurer’s office.

The delinquent bills range from nearly $3,000 to less than $30. Most are for a few hundred dollars.

In all, the taxes owed total more than $100,000.
